My small telescope can’t see smaller galaxies, but I like to see larger ones. It would nice to be able to choose Larger Galaxies and Smaller Galaxies and separate selector items.
Do you have an approximate idea of how big/small are the galaxies you can see? That would be ideal, because what “large” and “small” means varies a lot between scopes and users. If you have an idea of the minimum apparent size you want, you can filter down objects by size in https://telescopius.com/deep-sky-objects
Does that work for you?
Yep I just found that and have been trying it. A funny side effect is the apparent size is weird for long and thing galaxies (your view) where say its 10 arc minutes but that’s just the length , but the width is very tiny, so still hard to see. But yes it works for now.
You’re right, we should probably have separate filters for major/minor axes. I’ll add that to the backlog, thank you!
Well that’s why i said, large and small galaxies its simpler, but you could say kind of like multiply them say 10 x 10 arcminutes (anything that’s say 100 sq arcminute or larger), for example 15 x 1 arcminute is just too small.
I get what you say, a filter by area. I like the idea, so I’ve added it to the backlog too, thanks
In the meantime, you might find it useful to filter down by surface brightness too. If you’re unsure which values to use, you can get a rough estimate by looking the SB of a galaxy you’ve already seen from your scope. I believe you should be able to see thin galaxies provided they have a high SB.
Please note this would be useful just for narrowing down your list in case it’s too big, as you would be leaving out other galaxies big enough but with lower SB.
Good idea! Even using the apparent size filter has helped alot. Thx Skye.
Also note on smaller targets, the telescope simulator center crosshair covers the target in the middle, but not sure what you could do about it.
Please note you can disable the center reticle in the Simulator general settings if it’s bothering you:
Ah ,perfection, thx.
